Paddington Bear Tea Party

Somewhere in the the middle of the year we acquired some sweet Paddington Bear books. The illustrations by R.W. Alley were so sweet that we couldn’t help but fall in love with the sweet Peruvian bear, so a Paddington Bear theme it had to be for Bubbles’ 3rd Birthday party.

The invitations were simple luggage labels a nod to the label worn by Paddington himself on his long journey from darkest Peru. I then opted for a London packed theme with lots of red, white and blue, complete with iconic buses, black cabs and train station vibes.

As my girls LOVE chocolate cake, I usually opt for a simple chocolate fudge cake for their birthday cakes, but I couldn’t resist making a “Marmalade Sandwich”, which is of course is Paddington Bear’s all time favourite food. I also found inspiration for this cake on Pinterest, but instead used my Granny Doreen’s sponge cake recipe as it’s always a winner. The cake was basically a square Victoria sponge, with the top cut off to make it look like a sandwich. It was then lathered with cream and orange curd instead of the usual strawberry jam and it was very yummy, if I do say so myself!

What was the last party you went to?

Bubbles Turns Three!

I love my Jumpey, singing sweetly, prancing in my tutu, dressing up like a tiger cub, birdwatching, plane spotting, star gazing, binge reading, Peter Rabbit, Pooh Bear, Paddington Bear, bears in general, hide and seek with Daddy, cuddles with Mummy, gardening, tea parties, making dens with my big sister, nature walks through Candie Gardens, playing in Saumarez “Samuel” Park, stomping through leaves, splashing in puddles, rock pooling, collecting the post, being cheeky, giving kisses, and raucous belly laughs!

My favourite toys are my bear called Bear, toy animals, tiger dressing up clothes, and my dolls, Matilda and Ingrid.

My favourite books are The Dolls House Fairy, Bear & Mouse books, Beatrix Potter’s Tales and Paddington Bear.

My favourite foods are potatoes, sweet corn, baked beans, more potatoes, broccoli and chocolate cake!

Dear Blossom, at 4 years old you have yet to ask for anything for Christmas, the possibility of simply getting presents seems to be exciting enough for you. Just for the record you girls will be getting some gifts, but not because you’re less naughty than nice – we’re not keeping a list, nor checking it twice! – but because we love you just as you are. Dear Bubbles, waiting can be hard, especially when you’re waiting for your Daddy Man to finish work and come watch Christmas movies. Mummy Lady may be your “Best” when it comes to cuddles and comfort, but Daddy is clearly way more fun. Dearest Daughters, may your days be merry and bright, even if your Christmas is not very white.

What’s your favourite Christmas movie? Ours is Arthur Christmas.

Dear Blossom, aka. the Japanese Maple Fairy. Four weeks into our journey as whole life learners and I’m loving having you back home in the nest. Learning alongside you is perhaps one of the greatest joys that motherhood brings and also one of the biggest responsibilities. Your smiling face, quiet confidence and whimsical imagination spur me on. Your sweet affirmations and spontaneous kisses also help too! Dear Bubbles, as you know I try to capture the sweet moments of family life here, as an aid to my efforts to savour the moment and enjoy the little things. But that does not mean motherhood is always easy nor our lives always peachy. Toddler tantrums at this stage of life can be frequent, food fights occasionally happen, Mummy sometimes loses her cool and crying and comfort eating usually ensues. But through it all I love you with a fierce and deep love and thankfully, through it all He is faithful. Dearest Daughters, life is a journey not a destination, may you always remember to enjoy where you are on the way to wherever you are going.

What little things are you enjoying in this season of life?

Dear Blossom, you teach me to be patient and kind and you encourage me to be bold and courageous. Always remember that following your heart is not necessarily the easy thing to do, but it is more often than not the right thing. Take courage and do it afraid. Dear Bubbles, it’s amazing how much your young mind absorbs. Last week as we strolled through the park you found all the conker trees by looking for their golden leaves, pointed out which ducks were boys and distinguished (and then imitated brilliantly) a crow’s call. Your wonder and enthusiasm for learning is contagious. Dearest Daughters, living, loving and learning with you girls is both a privilege and a joy, may I never take it for granted.

What do the little ones in your life teach you?

Dear Blossom, this summer has been particularly sweet and I love how sometimes the simplest of dates turn into the most perfect ones. The quality time, cuddles and girl talk really spoke to your heart, so much so that the chocolate ice-cream was merely a bonus. Thank you for reminding me of what’s truly important, for cherishing my company and of course, for sharing your ice-cream. You are generous in so many ways. Dear Bubbles, I don’t think anyone loves or needs me quite like you do right now. You like to hold my hand whilst eating your meals, steal my jumper so that you won’t feel scared and generally want to be with me every second of every day of every week of every year. It’s both endearing and flattering, but incredibly draining. Thank you for loving me so fiercely, for kissing me so tenderly and for sleeping so soundly – Mama really does need her evening respite. Dearest Daughters, may you always be this loving and kind, your grace and forgiveness on this road of motherhood is so greatly appreciated. Mama loves you.

What summertime fun have you been up to with your little ones?

Dear Blossom, You are all of a sudden so very grown up so Mama is feeling a little fragile today as we close this chapter on your play school days. Over the next 7 weeks of summer I plan to squeeze every last drop of preschool goodness out of you before you head on to the next adventure that is “big school.” (Oh and now is the time to get those extra ice-creams out of me, whilst I’m feeling all soppy and sentimental.) Dear Bubbles, Praise the Lord your mid summer sleeping blip appears to have come to an end! As much as I appreciate that you just love me sooooo much, you really don’t need to wake me at 1am, 3am and 5am to show me – the day time snuggles and monopoly of Mummy’s time really will suffice. Oh and congratulations on the transition to big girl pants, you’ll be following in your sister’s footsteps before I know it. Dearest Daughters, all good things come to an end, but always remember that the joy is in the journey.

What are your summer holiday plans?
