One last Charlotte Mason post, promise but I just had to share this pic. . Whilst in Ambleside I had to visit Charlotte’s grave to pay my respects and after a bit of searching we found it. There must be quite a few visitors to her graveside as there are actually signs in the graveyard to direct you to it and there was even a small bunch of flowers already on the grave. . The inscription on the grave is really beautiful listing some of her educational accomplishments, her heart for children and some of her most well known quotes. Today I visited the Armitt Museum & Library in Ambleside, Lake District to view a sample of some of the Charlotte Mason archives. . . Ambleside is where Charlotte based herself in later years, setting up a teacher training college, the building of which is still in use today for teacher training but now comes under the University of Cumbria. . The Armitt is responsible for the extensive archives that Charlotte and the PNEU left, too many to be kept on site so I recommend calling ahead to arrange a visit. . I spent an hour or so this morning reading through a sample box full of letters written by Charlotte, adverts for her training events, a register with details of the governesses at the training college, some PNEU articles, end of year examination papers, two nature journals and more. . The oldest article dated back to 1891 and of course the nature journals - from 1928 & 1938 - were the highlight for me. I also particularly liked the register of governesses as it was interesting to see the questions they were asked when signing up. . And just an FYI for all my fellow Charlotte Mason enthusiasts: If a trip to the English Lake District is not happening anytime soon then don’t worry! The most beautiful nature journal by a PNEU school student compiled throughout 1928. A Charlotte Mason education, whether at home or in a school, is full of so much truth, goodness and beauty. I left the Armitt Library today feeling inspired and grateful. . . We climbed a mountain! Well it was really a fell, but if you ask our girls who aren’t used to such hilly terrain then it was a mountain! We walked through forests, we scaled rocky climbs, we squelched through mud and we dodged lots of sheep poo to reach the top but reach it we did. Still continuing our Stone Age studies whilst on our road trip in England, because there are just so many Neolithic sites that are just too good to miss! .
