Hello, I’m Jessica. A minimalist homeschooling mother of three living on the British island of Guernsey. I’m also a nature lover, letter writer and journal keeper that wants to to live life with an open heart. Welcome to my blog.

Throw back to our weekend in Alderney last week. A tiny island with a ridiculous amount of forts, batteries and barracks. Every time you turn a corner there is another historical structure just waiting to be explored. Impressive for an island that is only 3 square miles in size! Here’s one of the 18 Victorian forts, Fort Clonque. You can actually hire this beauty to stay in, just make sure you time the tides right to get to it!

Our classroom is better than your classroom. Just sayin.

We’ve finally started reading this beauty of a book after gifting it to my youngest daughter last Christmas. Ratty and Mole are a hit so far and the beautiful illustrations by Inga Moore portray the English countryside in all its glory, so much so that I’m longing to do another U.K. roadtrip with the kiddos just to see some of beautiful Berkshire. First though a mini roadtrip to the idyllic Cotswolds with the Husby next month. ☺️

Throw back to a few weeks ago when we rode the little train, myself included. I’m such a fun and spontaneous mother like that. ☺️😉

Beautiful memorial to all the foreign labourers who died in Alderney during World War Two, estimated to be around 1500 people. 💖

We love Alderney and we also love our Madlugs! 💛 Check out @wearemadlug for some stylish luggage that makes a real difference.

Not many people realise that there were concentration camps on British soil during World War Two but there were and they were here in Alderney. Four camps in total; 2 concentration camps and 2 labour camps.

I’ve always loved Alderney. One of my besties is from here and I’ve visited many times over the last 20 years both for business and pleasure but today with the Husby I’ve explored parts of the island that I’ve never seen before! Crazy because it’s such a small island, even smaller than Guernsey at only 3 square miles in size and a population of around 2000. For such a small place it has an amazing amount of biodiversity though. Birds, butterflies, fish, even seaweed is plentiful here!

So that’s our first day of the school year done! It involved some reading, writing and maths for Table Time, a morning walk in the sunshine, a history Book Basket followed by some history videos curtesy of @bbc_teach , more chapters of our current read aloud, crumble baking, free play, a swimming lesson and all finished off by eating the crumble we baked! 😋
