As a blogger I also love reading other blogs so I have therefore decided to (try) each week to share with you some of the blog posts that I have found to be a great read via this Weekend Reads series.
I have found the following posts to either be challenging, encouraging and/or inspiring to me over the past week and feel that they connect well with the ethos of The Open Home so are worth sharing here.
Happy Reading and Happy (belated) Weekend!
- Adoption: A last resort for a second-class family? : The Urban Disciple
I truly love this post! My Husby and I have felt for many years that adoption is such a natural and beautiful way to build a family, after all it is the way that God has built his family. I appreciate that we can not all be passionate about the same good things, but for years I have looked at the church and thought, ‘why don’t more families adopt?’ and ‘if every family adopted just one child…’, what a major impact the church could have in providing loving homes for children all over the world!
If you are a Christian, please read this. If you want to have children, please read this. If you already have children and may want more, please read this. If you don’t feel adoption is for you but could support others to adopt, please read this.
- If You’re Doing Something That has Never Been Done Before : Holley Gerth
If you’ve been following the blog via our Facebook page then you’ll know that the Husby and I are currently reading through Holley’s book, ‘You Are Made for a God-Sized Dream’. Holley also runs a very uplifting blog and this short post gave me a reason to pause and reflect this week. I’m sure at times we all feel like our dreams are just too big and we don’t know how to go about achieving them and worry we’ve made mistakes along the way. I know I do!
My favourite line of this entire post is ‘obedience is success’. Such a simple sentence, yet so powerful. This really spoke to me. At times I have the tendency to look back over my journey and view the closed doors as failure. I’m still on my journey, perhaps on a different route but I’m still working towards my dreams. Maybe those dreams will never come to be or maybe they’ll give way to others dreams or even lead to heartbreak but, I will be successful as I will at least have tried. I will have been obedient in following the desires that God has put in my heart.
- To Moms of One or Two Children : Short Stop Blog
As mothers we tend to compare ourselves a lot, idolising mothers who we feel have got everything sorted and sadly, critiquing the ones we feel who do it wrong when really they just do it differently to us. This is such an encouraging post for mothers of one, two, three or more children as it acknowledges that every stage of motherhood, now matter how many kids you have, is hard work and all consuming.
If you’re a mother, married to a mother, a friend to a mother or one day hope to be a mother, this is worth a read.
- Screen Rules : In The Heart of My Home
A very relevant post for our screen infested era. Screens are both a blessing and a curse, to both adults and children. As a blogger I use my laptop fairly regularly and also make use of social media. I admit that although TV, iPods and smart phones have no hold over me, I can easily get absorbed in my internet world. To reap the blessings of all these screens I believe rules need to be put in place from early on within the family, whether that family includes children or not.
This post from In The Heart of My Home shares the screen rules they use in their family; rules that protect everyones safety, privacy, relationships and time whilst also making use of modern technology in an intentional way. I believe this post to be a really good starting point for building your own screen rules, I know I will be.
